on June 19, 2024

Many of us enjoy honey on a regular basis for its sweet, natural taste. Whether it's as a sweetener for our tea or coffee or drizzled over yoghurt, this golden delight is a favourite the world over. But few of us actually stop to think about the good it can do besides its delicious taste.

But the fact is, honey is much more than just a tasty treat. In fact, it has been used by civilisations all over the globe for its therapeutic benefits. And when you combine this with the power of CBD - you could have an amazing health and wellness product on your hands.

In this article, we’re taking a closer look at the potential health benefits of both CBD and honey and how combining these two ingredients offers an easy (and delicious) way to introduce CBD into your everyday routine.

The Natural Power of Honey

The use of honey by humans has been traced back over 8,000 years and is depicted in Stone Age paintings. In this long history, we have utilised honey for a wide range of therapeutic uses with this use documented by the ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Chinese, Greeks, and Romans to name a few!

Medicinal Honey in History

In Ancient Hindu culture, as noted in the ancient Ayurvedic texts, honey was considered one of nature’s most remarkable gifts to mankind. According to these texts, honey is helpful for individuals with weak digestion and in the treatment of an irritating cough. Ayurvedic texts also note its usefulness in maintaining teeth and gum health, treating insomnia, and treating skin disorders, wounds, and burns. When applied daily to the eyes, it was also said to improve eyesight and prevent cataracts.

Similarly, in Ancient Egyptian culture, honey was the most popular medical product, featuring in the Smith papyrus (dated between 2600 and 2200 B.C.). It was prescribed as a standard wound salve and in embalming the dead. Moreover, almost all Egyptian medicines contained honey.

Moving over to Ancient Greece, honey was featured in a large array of medicinal products. It was a key ingredient in the treatment of gout and some nervous disorders and the famous physician Hippocrates often prescribed honey combined with vinegar (called oxymel) for pain, while water and honey (hydromel) were given to combat thirst. Honey was also used in contraception, wound healing, to treat coughs and sore throat, eye diseases, and even to prevent baldness!

The Health Benefits of Honey

Some of the uses for honey mentioned above might seem a little bit “out there”, but even today, there is an abundance of evidence to support the therapeutic properties of honey. The ingredients found in honey have been found to have antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, anticancer, and antimetastatic effects.

There are around 300 different types of honey that are based on the different types of nectar collected by honeybees. While the main composition of honey comes from carbohydrates (making up 95-97% of its dry weight), it also includes proteins, vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and organic acids, as well as flavonoids, polyphenols, and other compounds.

Honey’s antioxidant activity of honey likely contributes to its potential in preventing inflammatory, allergic, thrombotic, diabetic, cancer, and other acute and chronic disorders. Other benefits of honey include:

  • Anti-infective properties: Honey has been found to have an inhibitory effect on around 60 species of bacteria.
  • An aid for wound healing: Honey has a cleansing activity, stimulates tissue regeneration, and reduces inflammation.
  • Protects against gastrointestinal infection: Honey has been found to inhibit the adherence of Salmonella in the intestine.
  • Antiviral effects: The application of honey has been found to prevent recurrent attacks of herpes lesions and may also be beneficial against rubella virus activity.

Boosting Benefits with CBD

The health and wellness potential of honey has been well-documented over thousands of years. But there is another ingredient that was also favoured by many of the same ancient civilisations: cannabis. In recent years, one of the most common compounds found in the cannabis plant has become a favourite among those seeking to boost their wellness.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid that is found in abundance in hemp - low-THC varieties of Cannabis sativa. As research has increased into this unassuming compound, it has become popular among health enthusiasts for its many perceived health benefits.

Current evidence shows that in acute doses, CBD can be effective at reducing the frequency and severity of epileptic seizures, reducing anxiety, and improving sleep.

In the UK, CBD-based medicines can now be prescribed by specialist doctors for the treatment of a wide range of conditions. Furthermore, CBD has become increasingly accessible as a food supplement and can now be found in a wide range of CBD products, including oils, skincare, and edibles - like honey!
